Mark Robinson, Principal Investigator of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) says the most often-asked questions he gets about the images LRO has taken of the Moon are about pictures of the Apollo landing sites and what is visible. Especially, Robinson said, people want to know if the flags are still standing.

“Personally I was a bit surprised that the flags survived the harsh ultraviolet light and temperatures of the lunar surface, but they did,”

Images and video show that at some of the landing sites – Apollo 12, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17 – the flags must still be intact, because they are creating shadows on the surface.

James Fincannon, a NASA engineer from Glenn Research Center, combined LROC images of each Apollo site taken at roughly the same orientation but with different Sun angles to show the travel of shadows.

“Combined with knowledge of the Apollo site maps which show where the flag was erected relative to the Lander, long shadows cast by the flags at the three sites show that the these flags are still “flying”, held aloft by the poles,” Fincannon wrote. (report here)

All are standing except for the Apollo 11 flag.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin reported that the flag was blown over by the exhaust from the ascent engine during liftoff of Apollo 11, and Robinson said that from the images of the Apollo 11 landing site, it looks like he was correct.

Robinson added that the most convincing way to see that the flags are still there is to view a time series of LROC images taken at different times of day, and watch the shadow circle the flag ( 1 )

The video below shows that the flag is still standing at the Apollo 12 site.

Some people still can not understand why people like myself question whether we went to the Moon even after we have seen evidence for it, like the above images.

So am I part of "The Lunatic Fringe" who denies "hard evidence" that will "never override the thrill" I get by "being in the know" that "fills the void" in my life?

The Images clearly show the flags and site don't they?

Well Ill leave the answer to both questions up to you to decide but I would like to ask

What is so wrong with me questioning it?

I see dots and shadows and from what I have found up to this point in my research I know that images like this could easily be produced artificially by many computer savvy individuals, let alone an organization with a Billion dollar yearly budget and experts in the field of visual presentation digital editing.

And like most that question it, I find it very difficult to accept "hard evidence" like this that is provided by the very organization who we are questioning.

Can I get a second or third party to verify this? ( I need to check and addthe information here on Japan’s Kaguya spacecraft, Chandrayaan from India)

I would also like to point out the wording used in articles presenting images like this.

Of all the terms that could have been used why say "the most convincing"

In the second comment, although In my opinion fast food was not a good analogy, he asks "why would they not be standing, there's no air, no wind etc".

I think that is an excellent question but not when viewed like the reply he received. I could understand the harsh radiation and other factors but I wonder if they release images like this at regular intervals to keep reinforcing the fact that they went, to convince people they went.

What I worry about is not the supposed thrill I get from being in the so called know that fills the implied void in my life but the fact that someone will look at images like this which in my opinion are not showing anything and accept it without any question, without any investigation simply because they have been told it is real and see me as a "lunatic" for simply pointing out that there are a few issues.

Perhaps if they understood that I have not just seen the images above and was skeptical but I have also looked at lots of the other information that may support my claim then it would be a different response.

I cant say for certain the person claiming "lunatics" hasn't but maybe if they had looked into the subjects in more detail, without just accepting it because they were told its real they might question it as well.

Unanswered questions about the American flags on the moon could fuel conspiracy theorists even more, but Robert Pearlman, an expert on space history and collectibles, and editor of collectSPACE.com thinks they represent further proof against supposed hoaxes.

"I think it actually bolsters the idea that we actually did go," he said. "We didn't design a special American flag to go to the moon to last thousands of years. They literally sent out a secretary to the nearby Sears and bought an off-the-shelf flag and modified it."

The natural disintegration of the flag's material in the harsh conditions on the moon's surface is to be expected, Pearlman said. Still, the new LRO images will do little to sway firm believers in the Apollo conspiracy theories, he added.

"If they believe we actually faked going to the moon, then the idea of taking an image like this and adding a couple of dark pixels is way too easy," Pearlman said. "They're not going to be swayed. But, for everyone else, it's a new view of a great accomplishment."
