The Mandela Effect

The Mandela Effect is a theory put forth by writer and “paranormal consultant” Fiona Broome that has found a large number of people world wide shared "false memories" of Events, Book Titles, Famous movie lines and even the position of continents and suggests the cause could be parallel worlds, Alternate Universe or different time lines.

Now its not uncommon to have a few people disagree but there are thousands of people who are 100% positive it is one way and in reality it is another.

The effect is named after Nelson Mandela as there are thousands of people who remember him dying in prison when in reality he died on December 5th 2013 at the age of 95 surrounded by friends and family in his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa after suffering a prolonged respiratory infection.

His death received world wide media coverage not only on the day of his death and the 10 day National mourning period but i personally remember months worth of coverage leading up to his death. His condition being "critical" was announced on June 23rd 2013 with what seemed like every day bringing "Doctors say today is the day".

The official memorial service was held on December 10th 2013 and was attended by heads of state and government from several nations.

Controversy surrounded the memorial service.

There was unexpected booing of the South African president  Jacob Zuma.

There was the Barack Obama / Raul Castro Handshake, People were comparing it to the British Prime ministers handshake with Adolf Hitler in 1938.

There was the Obama / Thorning / Schmidt / Cameron Selfie which was highly criticized on social media.

There was also ongoing controversy after the sign language Interpreter Thamsanqa Jantjie, who stood on the memorial stage along side world leaders throughout the event was accused of being a fake as he made meaningless hand gestures that did not reflect established signs.

The state funeral was held on December 15th 2013. The ceremony was also televised up until the burial which was requested in advance by the family.

For someone to have not seen or heard the news is a huge stretch. You would have literally had to have been living under a rock.

So why do so many people remember him dying in Prison?

Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prision on February 11th 1990 after an international campaign. His release was also a massive world wide media event with the famous footage of him holding his wife Winnie's hand  followed by a speech declaring his commitment to peace and reconciliation with the white minority.

The clear memory for thousands is he died in the 1980's but for this to have been so you haven't just mistaken a date or got the media coverage wrong by a period of , lets say 23 years.......... but you would also have had to missed his entire career after that point.

Over 250 Honours including the Nobel peace prize in 1993, the US presidential medal of freedom, the Soviet Lenin Peace prize.

South Africa's first Black Chief executive, the first elected president from 1994 to 1999 in a fully representative democratic election.

After Presidency he continued with activism and philanthropy till 2004  and even after his announcement of "Retiring from Retirement" still remained a public figure.

So at this point you may be saying (unless you remember his death in prision) "Ok those people are clearly wrong, how could you think that"

Don't you think it is a really hard thing to mistake?

This is just one of many "False Memories" that have been discovered. Some are small and some are large.

Lets start small.

When i first heard of the Mandela effect the stand out topic for me is related the the movie "Forrest Gump"

The Movie is full of famous words of wisdom and one liners from Forrest which are still repeated by people everywhere.

I have seen the movie literally hundreds of times. I can watch the movie and know exactly, word for word, what is going to be said. Or so I thought.

I would say the most remembered line for me is during the opening scene. He is sitting on a bus bench and starts talking to a lady next to him. He offers her a chocolate and then quotes what his mum used to say to him.

Do you know the line? Fill in the red blank in the image below.

What did you say?

Now I swear, 110% that the line is "Life IS like a box of chocolates". Do you agree?

Watch the clip from the scene by clicking the link below and see what he says.

Forrest Gump scene

I was shocked when i heard "Life WAS like a box of chocolates".

This might not seem like a big thing but as i said, i thought i knew the movie word for word. I've seen i written  places, heard other say it.

It doesn't even make sense to me saying "was"because  if "you never know what your going to get" saying "was" would mean you already had it.

The funny thing is that the video i linked  was the second video in a google search for "Forrest Gump quotes" but was the fist "1/10" (click here) and the title in the video was "Life is" and the Youtube video title is "Life is".

The same search but in the images tab (click here) lists the meme style quotes and the first 3 of this line say "was" but then the next 6 that i could see were all "Is" and they far out number the correct line said in the movie.

Here are some other searches for the quote

20 classics says "is" in the intro but then "was" in the actual quote.

14 awesome correctly states it.

Top 10 has it as the number 1 and is correct but the comments below say "life is".

Ok so its one word in a movie. Easy mistake right?

Lets do a little test to see how well you remember the lines in movies or series

Fill in the word where "Answer" is displayed and click on the link for the answer. Try to answer off the top of your head.

Interview with [Answer] Vampire.

Sex [Answer] the city

Field of dreams - "if you build it, [Answer] will come"

Star wars-  "[Answer] i am your father"

Jaws- "[Answer] going to need a bigger boat"

Silence of the Lambs- "[Answer] Clarice"

Snow White- "[Answer], Mirror on the wall"

How did you go?

Now if your like me, i would have see that list and said "Easy, Piece of cake".

I discovered that it was the worst result for a test I've ever taken with a big fat 0%. Not one of them right and i love my movies.

Like with Forrest Gump you can search the titles and lines and get plenty of results with what I thought they would be

I was Sure it is "A" Vampire. Tom cruise even says "A" Vampire. Listen here. And again i don't think that  "The" vampire even makes sense.

I always thought Sex "In" the city.  i couldn't find any reference to it.

Of course its "they will come" in field of dreams. Apparently not but the only images I find in this search  for "Field of dreams" say "they". This search for "if you build it" has 1 or 2 that say "he will come.

Star Wars...... Come on !!!!!!! of course he said "Luke, i am your father".  This would have to be one of the most memorable lines in a movie ever, In fact it made number 1 of the top 100 movie moments (see here). How many times have you said it, heard someone else said it, seen it on things like signs and merchandise etc.

I was 110% sure he says"Luke". But no.

I've seen it on T-shirts.  Sooooo glad i never bought one. Look here

In Jaws he most certainly said "we're going to need a bigger boat". Nope I'm wrong again.

Silence of the lambs he definitely said "Hello Clarice". But i was way off, nothing close to "good evening"

The witch in  Snow white said "Mirror, Mirror on the wall". I remember it so clearly. Magic mirror is actually hard for me to say because its so......wrong.

Do you have the same memory as me or am i justcompletely off?

I've just got a bad memory i suppose. No, I've actually got a very good memory and what would be the chances of me getting EVERY SINGLE ONE incorrect?

The lines in a movie may be one thing but how about some more celebrity deaths.

Henry Winkler played "Fonzie" on Happy Days. Dead or alive? Many claim he died during Happy days but is still alive and well.

Betty White – Dead or alive?. She is alive well but some recall her passing.

Muhammad Ali – 2009 death?  Still alive, ignore the hoax in Jan 2016.

Patrick Swayze- Dead or Alive? some people remember his full recovery from cancer but actually passed in 2009.

Mecanism behind the mandela effect

We are fortunate to be alive at a time when scientists from several different branches of physics are converging on the idea that we live in a holographic multiverse… AND that everything including you and me have a truly quantum nature. When we put these two big ideas together, we see the mechanism by which we can understand and appreciate how things like intuition, synchronicity, the placebo effect, and spontaneous remission can transpire.

Evidence supporting the concept of many parallel universes being interconnected comes from UC Berkeley’s Raphael Bousso, whose view of reality has been gaining support ever since last year’s discovery of the Higgs boson. And there is further good news for those wondering, “Where are these other parallel universes?” Some of the first hard evidence of other universes was found just this year by theoretical physicist Laura Mersini-Houghton of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Carnegie Mellon professor Richard Holman, through cosmic background radiation data collected by the European Space Agency’s Planck telescope, which indicates the presence of other external universes to our own at the very moment of the Big Bang.

What Happens in the Quantum Realm Doesn’t Stay in the Quantum Realm

In much the same way that some people prefer that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” many physicists have hoped that the weirdness known to happen in the quantum realm would remain safely confined there. This appears to not be the case, as evidenced in recent ground-breaking laboratory experiments over the past few years. Increasing numbers of studies with macroscopic scale objects, such as diamonds, are consistently and repeatedly demonstrating such distinctly quantum behaviors as entanglement–which Albert Einstein once called, “spooky action at a distance.”

Other behaviors previously presumed to reside exclusively within the quantum scale including: superposition of states, coherence, and teleportation are also being witnessed on the macroscopic scale. This is happening to the point that a growing consensus is beginning to form amongst physicists, such as those surveyed at a recent conference that you and I and everyone and everything around us exists in a superposition of states.

This means that in one possible reality, you have not made a decision that resulted in your catching a cold, but in another possible reality, you have. We can expect to occasionally experience quantum jumps from one possible reality to another, particularly when we are aware that such leaps are possible. These jumps from one reality to another can be a lot of fun, as some of the world’s quantum jumping experts can attest.

And who, might you ask, are the world’s quantum jumping experts? Such experts include most of the world’s top athletes, medical miracle experiencers, heroes, survivors of close brushes with death, experienced meditators, beneficiaries of the placebo effect, and people experienced with hypnosis and lucid dreaming have experienced leaps to better possible realities. These people often trust intuition, and benefit from a sense of there being a connectedness between themselves and everyone and everything else.
